The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a highly infectious respiratory disease first reported in Wuhan, Hubei province, China in December 2019, has now spread globally infecting more than 26 million people in the whole world and caused more than 864,000 fatalities as of 4 September 2020 [1,2]. A new type of coronavirus with over 70 % genetic similarity to SARS-CoV was identified as the culprit and named SARS-CoV-2 by the World Health Organization (WHO) [3–5]. In Portugal the first case was confirmed on March 2, 2020.
